EPA List N — Disinfectants for emerging viral pathogens
EPA List N is the Environmental Protection Agency’s curated registry of disinfectants qualified under its emerging viral pathogens (EVP) guidance — the federal crosswalk for SARS-CoV-2 and similar outbreak pathogens when no product-specific EPA-registered claim yet exists. List N is not a suggestion list; it’s the agency’s authoritative roster of products that have demonstrated efficacy against a harder-to-kill virus within the EVP hierarchy (or carry an approved emerging-pathogen label claim), and it’s the artifact a surveyor reaches for when reviewing a facility’s disinfectant selection. For a healthcare facility, List N is the line of defense between a defensible disinfectant program and one a public-health inspector will write up — it tells you, on the record, which products meet the EVP criteria for the pathogens your facility actually faces.
What the standard requires
A written program, measured — not just printed.
List N criteria sit on four load-bearing elements. First, every disinfectant on a facility’s approved list must carry an active EPA registration number and be registered for the surface type on which it’s being applied. Second, the active ingredient(s) must have demonstrated efficacy against a harder-to-kill virus within the EVP hierarchy, OR the product must carry an approved emerging-pathogen label claim — the agency’s way of saying the chemistry works against pathogens harder to kill than the outbreak strain. Third, application has to follow the label exactly: concentration, surface contact (dwell) time, and re-application cadence matched to the product’s registered directions, not crew memory or a generic checklist. Fourth — and the part surveyors read first — the facility’s documentation has to show product selection tied to List N, with a documented selection rationale, surface-matched label directions, and a date-stamped citation to the active List N edition so the citation doesn’t drift between EPA refreshes.
